Friday FRAY: Broncos-Raiders and the Nuggets slow start

Facts: The Broncos travel to Oakland to play the horrible Raiders, boy do I like typing that “Horrible Raiders” line. It’s time to see if Cody Latimer is a player, because further commitment to Wes Welker is pointless, and most likely fruitless as well. Playing Welker full time in these games will certainly end him up in the concussion protocol week in and week out. Latimer is the future, and Welker should be in Gase’s rear view mirror, soon, if not now. Gase needs to figure out how to get Julius Thomas back into the game plan once again. The guy is unstoppable if he can get off the line, but for some reason Ronnie Hillman gets more touches than a baby lamb at the petting zoo.

Rumors: John Elway has to have a come to Jesus meeting with John Fox. Fox can’t see (cliché warning) the forest through the trees. Fox needs to know that he is history if the Broncos don’t win the Super Bowl. That’s right John Fox, your tush is out of here if all is not won. You do not have another season to give away, but you have some games in this stretch to see what in the Hell you have off the bench. Manning is not the gift that is going to keep on giving, he’s got a freshness date, and it’s coming due. Coach this team, and stop listening to your iPod during the game.

Anecdotes &: Adam Gase is frustrated with the Broncos running game. Well join the club Adam. Make some damn choices that are outside the box, not just business as usual. The offensive line is playing musical chairs, this week and Monte Ball is close to coming back, but many lbs lighter. Lets see how that works out in pass protection for Manning, he may get swatted around like a ping pong ball. Please let us see if Juwan Thompson can carry the load as the feature back, and use Ronnie Hillman as a change of pace back, not the primary. Ball is not “The” guy, he’s “A” guy and the sooner you figure that out the sooner your frustration ends.

Yarns: The Nuggets have sucked four games into the season, and thus far there is no real hope in site. There doesn’t seem to be a spark on this roster, and Brian Shaw needs to light a fire under someone’s butt. Arron Afflalo, who knows a little about competing, said yesterday, “Not just out there competing just to compete, but competing to win. It takes some smarts, it takes some execution, it takes togetherness.” So far there is no togetherness. Okay Mr. Shaw, it’s your move. No one is showing up at the Pepsi Center, and your job hangs in the balance.

Film Review: Low Down
7 Stars out of 10

Based on a true story of Joe Albany (John Hawkes) a near-do-well jazz pianist, who is addicted to drugs, and struggles to get through each day by himself, never mind while raising his early teenage daughter Amy-Jo (Elle Fanning). Amy-Jo is living a life between the cracks she has had to fall between everyday of her life. Low Down is set in urban Hollywood in the mid ’70s, and life is tough, and with little to smile about, even when her day lands a gig, or sticks around trying to score another high. Young Amy-Jo seems to have no shot in life, but as brilliantly played by Elle Fanning there is this empathy that continues to grow or her throughout this film. Tough, gritty and worth your time, Low Down is playing exclusively at Landmark’s Chez Artiste on South Colorado Blvd.
